SEMPORNA, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- Network coverage in this district, including the Bugaya state seat, has been improved through the implementation of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) Phase One (2020-2022), said Sabah Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) director Izani Othman.
He said mobile coverage for 4G/LTE in populated areas in Semporna has increased by 20.51 per cent, as of the third quarter of 2022.
“The percentage increase is from 73.02 per cent to 93.53 per cent, over eight quarters, starting from the third quarter of 2020,” he told Bernama.
In addition, he said the JENDELA initiative also involved upgrading 46 existing transmitting stations in Bugaya state seat to the 4G network.
“As of the third quarter of 2022, this initiative has reached 89.2 per cent, with 41 existing transmitting stations having been upgraded to the 4G network,” he added.
In the meantime, Izani said there was a plan to build four towers in Bugaya to improve mobile broadband coverage and as of the third quarter of 2022, the plan is being implemented and expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2023.
“The construction for the four towers was decided before the JENDELA project, in addition to the existing 32 towers in Semporna,” he added.
Meanwhile, Izani said the government is setting up a Keluarga Malaysia Digital Economic Centre (PEDi) in this district to boost Semporna residents' digital economic activities.
“There are five PEDi centres in Semporna including one in Kampung Bugaya. PEDi’s function now, apart from providing internet access in rural areas, is also offering services and support to young entrepreneurs in rural areas to stimulate the economy digitally,” he added.
